If you are thinking of starting a business or are dissatisfied with your existing businesses’ level of success, an important and effective exercise is to research as much about your ideal customer/client.
Here are some tips to help you get clear on who you would like to attract most into your business and find your sweet spot!
What is an ideal customer/client? It is the type of person you would like to service/sell to the most. This doesn't mean that you can’t work with people that deviate from your core audience you are attracting. But it is important to find our sweet spot and here’s why!
Why is it important to identify an ideal customer/client?
First, attracting the right client will make your services that much more effective and enjoyable (which leads to amazing testimonials!). It will also make working with that person much more enjoyable.
Second, knowing your ideal customer/client will help to strengthen your messaging, meaning anytime we are communicating (copy on our website, IG bio, in a post, in a mailer) we need to speak in a way that would really resonate with our ideal client. Essentially, we want them to think, how does this company know me so well?!
And finally, your ideal client/customer radar will be laser focused. You will be better able to target and pinpoint your ideal client/customer in any situation (seeing them online, at a networking event, etc.)
What you should know about your ideal client…
Really as much as you can but here are some biggies!
1. What problem are they facing?
2. What is their ultimate goal/dream come true
3. What might they have tried before and what is it now costing them that they still have this problem
4. Where do they live?
5. Demographics
6. Beliefs
7. What fears might they have in purchasing from you?
8. Income level
9. Employment level
10. Lifestyle - Where do they spend their time online? Hobbies outside of work? Do they have children
11. Relationship/Marital Status
Where you can find them/or learn about them:
I recommend that you put a survey together. I like to use Jotform and then send that survey out in a post within Facebook groups (or any in-person / online groups out there) that your client might just be handing out in. For example, if you are targeting moms with toddlers in the Boston area, there are a ton of mom-focused mom groups out there! Also, I recommend that you create a separate survey to learn more about a client who already hired you. Ask questions like, “Why did you decided to hire me?”
In closing, word of mouth is a powerful (and free) marketing tool. Want people to have an incredible experience in working with you to promote your business and help you attract more ideal clients. Not to mention, collect as many testimonials as we can. There’s been times I have agreed to take on a client that I knew wasn’t right for me, and although the outcome may have worked, I was the one who suffered! I often tell those who are looking to start a service-based business especially, that they don’t need to service everyone. Matter fact, this is a bad strategy as you could end up working with people who would prevent your services from working as powerfully as they could.
